The Smith family is still very much present in the Italian mansion they built for a growing family, perched on the edge of Lake Michigan. It’s now a museum enjoyed by all of Milwaukee. But if you wander among the hedges of the courtyard, you can sense the glee their children had weaving and darting among them. The breeze that sweeps across the courtyard during an al fresco dinner still carries the whispers of those long-ago dreams. The corridors feel close and comforting. Love and attention are steeped into each and every detail of the structure and gardens. This is a family home, still to this day. I wonder if they knew they were building a legacy of this scale. That not only would their home encapsulate their story, but also become the start of so many other stories. I wonder if they hoped that it would one day be the setting of their grand-grandson Josh’s wedding to Beth, and a new generation of Smiths.
