He adjusted his position a bit in the hall, checked for the sparkle factor. The ring shone brightly under the hall light, just as he had planned. He knew she would be out of the office down the hall any minute. He gathered his thoughts. He had conceived of a whole different plan for this moment, but recent events showed him that the perfect plan, the perfect moment, they didn’t matter as much as doing it to start with. It was an ordinary day; she was on her way home from work, he was waiting for her arrival. They had been on the phone, chatting mindlessly about dinner plans when he heard it. The crash, the crack, the smashing of glass, the “oh my….” from her, and then the silence. Yes, a near-death experience puts things in perspective. And so today, they were moving forward. No more waiting. The door at the end of the hall opened. He saw her smile, kneeled down, held the ring up in that perfect pool of light. Her hands flew to her face, “Oh my!” she cried.
